The Farnese Hercules Plaster Cast c. 1790
Plaster cast of the original marble sculpture depicting Hercules—the hero of classical mythology—resting after his labours. Attributed to the distinguished Athenian sculptor Glykon, c. 216 CE, the original is preserved at the Museo Archeologico Nazionale, Naples. This cast was made in Rome and later shipped to London by sea.
In the 19th century, a fig leaf was added to cover the statue’s oversized genitalia, safeguarding the sensibilities of female visitors.
Today, it stands at Burlington House, home of the Royal Academy of Arts in London’s Piccadilly, viewable in all its glory—without the fig leaf.
